Book of the Week: Tell the Wolves I'm Home

Maybe all I wanted was for Toby to hear the wolves that lived in the dark forest of my heart. And maybe that’s what it meant. Tell the Wolves I’m Home. Maybe Finn understood everything, as usual. You may as well tell them where you live, because they’ll find you anyway. They always do.

I'm having a tough time giving Tell the Wolves I'm Home a straight assessment. There's no denying that Carol Rifka Brunt's prose is gorgeous and full of little gems of profound wisdom, but ultimately the beauty of her writing wasn't quite enough to make me overlook the flaws in character and story. Still definitely worth a read though.

Things I am Loving Lately

We leave for Europe in TWO DAYS!!! By this time next week, we'll be on a train heading from London to York and we will have seen the Harry Potter movie studio tour, the Tower of London, and we'll have celebrated our 2 year anniversary. You guys have no idea how excited I am, partly to see England and Scotland, partly just for the experience of traveling, and partly because this is the first time I have really taken off from work since last August. Let the games begin!

Anyway, here's some shtuff I have been enjoying lately.

Yoga!!
Granted, I always enjoy yoga but since diving into Christina Sell's Asana Junkies webinar series I've been getting together with yoga buddies to geek out on a more regular basis. Sometimes we practice for a couple of hours and work our way through the Asana Junkies sequences, sometimes we just at a coffee shop table with Light on Yoga and talk about yoga nerdery, things we've been noticing in the yoga community, and our pets. Plus I've been exploring new classes, styles and studios, stretching a little outside my comfort zone more than just physically :)

LoY and Lattes - an unbeatable combination

Snapping a photo for posterity at one of our weekend practice sessions
In a related story, Lululemon needs to stop making so many stripey tops in such awesome colors. Stripey tops are my downfall, my clothing budget does not appreciate you right now lululemon.

STRIPES! COLORS!

Vegetarian sushi from Whole Foods
It's kind of pricey ($7 for a roll? blah) so I only buy it once a week or so but damn are those purple yam rolls tasty. Maybe my new favorite lunch splurge...ok it might not sound like a splurge but I usually pack my lunch, and even if I forget to do so the caf at work is subsidized and my lunch usually costs less than $4. So $7 feels like a lot but it is sooo worth it every once in a while.

Minneapolis Summers!
I really love summer in the Twin Cities - nothing beats an evening walk around Lake Calhoun on a perfect night. Every year around late February/early March I start to question why I still live here...and then in June and July I remember. Don't get me wrong, each of our seasons has its own beauty but winter starts to get old after a few months. The other day when I was running through our neighborhood a got a huge hit of Lilac, reminding me to enjoy this weather while it lasts.

will never move
Hmm I think that about does it for today! I have not even started packing, and we're going to two Twins games over the next two days, plus a BBQ with friends tomorrow so it will be an action-packed couple of days. I'm also working on Friday (from home) but since literally my entire team is on vacation it should be pretty low-key.

Happy 4th, enjoy the holiday!

Book of the Week: The Ocean at the End of the Lane

“Monsters come in all shapes and sizes, Some of them are things people are scared of. Some of them are things that look like things people used to be scared of a long time ago. Sometimes monsters are things people should be scared of, but they aren't.”

I never know how to start writing about the books I truly love - the ones that infiltrate the corners of my mind and stay there for days, weeks, months after I've finished them.

I can try to tell you what The Ocean at the End of the Lane is about...at least, I can tell you what it made me think about. This is a book about childhood, memory and loss. How would we live, if we knew what was lurking behind the thin veneer of reality? Would we make different choices if we understood the sacrifices that had been made on our behalf? Is it really easier to forget, to not know these things, than it is to walk through the world with the weight of them on our backs?

This is one of those novels where upon finishing it, I immediately had to start it over again because the ending made me see the beginning in a whole new light. It is poignant and heartbreaking, and fantastically eerie in the way only a Neil Gaiman book can be. There were times when I felt like I was reading a very dark Studio Ghibli film, and I mean that in the best possible way. Plus kittens. KITTENS NEIL REALLY?? Come on.

Anyway. That's all I'll say for now. Read this book.

I'm going to start trying to do this book of the week thing. Is it even a thing? Eh...it is now. I'm making it one. Even if I'm not actually able to finish a book a week (highly likely) I've read a lot of books in my life so I have some serious catching up to do. Book of the Week may be a book I'm currently reading or a book I just finished, or it might be something I read years ago. Whatever strikes my fancy. We'll see where this goes.

Bus Stop Miracles

I've slowly come to realize that probably 85% of my ability to function as an adult human is dependent on the sheer kindness of the people around me who do not steal my crap when I leave it lying around everywhere.

Generally, I am an extremely thorough person. On any project I'm working on, I will make sure absolutely every scenario is covered, no stone is left unturned and all details are accounted for. But at the same time, I have a tendency toward extreme flakiness that just refuses to be defeated. Forget my mat at the yoga studio for 3 consecutive weeks? Sure. Leave my car keys in a coffee shop (but remember everything else I am carrying)? Why the heck not. Abandon my driver's license at a random table in the airport? You bet. Each and every one of these things has been returned to me, and I have given up on trying to explain how or why this happens.

It's never going to change. Trust me. And don't even tell me I am being defeatist because there is a big, big difference between being defeatist and being realistic about who I am. I will always love reading more than big parties. I will always be able to memorize a piece of music after singing it two to three times, and I will always forget whatever I am carrying the second I put it down.

My parents are not convinced of this. They really and truly believe that if I develop the right 'system' I'll never forget anything again. Nope. False. I'll just forget the system. For example, getting into my office requires an access badge. If this badge is not in my purse when I leave my house in the morning, I will forget it, guaranteed. In order to make sure this doesn't happen, I take off my badge and put it in my purse every day as I'm leaving the building. The further I get from my desk still wearing the badge, the more dramatically my chances of remembering it in the morning decrease. The system works probably 80% of the time, but without it I'd be batting 200. So no, it's not perfect, but in most circles a 4X improvement is nothing to sniff at. I'll never get to 100%. No system on this earth is ever going to make this happen. Ever. ....Ever. Just deal with it.

During grad school, I took the bus to campus every day and most of the time, I managed to get off the bus with the same amount of stuff I was carrying when I got on the bus (OK aside from one umbrella. Possibly two umbrellas). It was a minor miracle.

However.

One day, during the spring of my first year, I got off the bus, walked into the building and immediately realized that my purse, which I had definitely been carrying when I left my apartment, was no longer on my person. First, I panicked. Then I immediately called metro transit (thankfully my phone had been in my jacket pocket and not in my purse) and spent probably 20-30 minutes being transferred from department to department, trying to contact someone who could tell me whether my purse was still on the bus. Finally, they got ahold of the driver and discovered that nope, my purse was not on the bus.

This is my friend Lindsey and me, probably 3 years ago. Pictured on the table is the offending purse
I cannot even describe what an idiot I felt like at that moment. I had let my attention wander for one second, and now I was completely hosed. I had no money to buy lunch. I had no way of getting home because my cash and my bus pass were in my wallet, and even if I had been able to get home I didn't have keys to get in the building, or car keys to drive anywhere else. I also knew I needed to call the bank and cancel my credit card and debit card, but all the information I needed in order to do so was...inside my locked apartment. Delightful.

Just as I had resigned myself to failure and an afternoon spent on the phone with the bank/at the DMV, I decided to check Facebook for some unknown reason. (kidding, I know exactly what the reason is. Facebook is addicting). I had one new message in my inbox. It was someone I had never met - a medical resident at the University Fairview hospital who wanted to let me know she'd found my purse. I had left it not on the bus like I thought, but at the BUS STOP IN UPTOWN, which is kind of even worse??!?

Not only had this lovely person found my purse before some shady person happened across it, but she also happened to be going to roughly the same destination (the U), AND she was an Ole. We hadn't known each other well but we had a number of mutual friends. Of all the bus stops in all the world, etc.

Don't get me wrong - I have lost things. See the aforementioned umbrellas, my favorite scarf from college (left on an elevator in NYC), my yoga mat strap (left at the studio and I'm pretty sure this one was an accident since it is the same damn black lululemon strap that everyone and their mom has), and I'm sure more that I can't remember. But thankfully, nothing too important (yet).

Anyway. All this to say, it can be hard to find that balance between believing in the essential goodness of people with the reality of the appalling things that we are capable of doing to each other, stealing purses being among the more minor offenders. Beautiful strangers have saved my ass too many times to count. All I can do is keep trying to pay it forward.

What's happening in Istanbul - spread the word

As many of you know, I spent January 2011 in Istanbul Turkey as part of my masters program. Just yesterday, I learned of the events that have transpired in that city over the last week or so.

During the last week of May, a group came together to protest the razing of one of Istanbul's last green spaces. What began quitely and peacefully quickly escalated into violence as police turned up with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons.

My friends and I stayed near Taksim and walked through that square every day. It's hard to picture such terrible things happening in a place that still feels close to my heart. Turkish authorities have been actively trying to stop the word from spreading, and even Western media sites seem reluctant to comment on or reveal the full extent of police brutality involved. Below are some links to blogs and photos from Taksim Square - PLEASE read and help spread the word. Just as a heads up, some of the photos in the first link are pretty graphic.

A box full of suggestions for your possible heart

Why hello there. Again, no posts for a month after numerous promises to post more often. Sorry about that.

Also the last time I posted, we had thundersnow, and now it's like 95 degrees. Welcome to Minnesota. No one is allowed to complain, because we've all spent the last three months bitching about the persistent cold weather. It is hot now. This is what you wanted. Deal with it.

Hmmm so, what have I been up to? I went to Chicago two weeks ago to see my sis and friends and had a fabulous time. I celebrated two of my dearest friends turning 30 (Tessa and Chris), saw my favorite band Cloud Cult perform at First Ave, and finally went over to the dark side and got an iPhone.

Cloud Cult!!

Today when I was cleaning off my desk at work, I came across a pile of documents from last September when I started my new role. They were job aids and other random things I had printed off in an effort to get up to speed, full of scribbles and arrows pointing to different acronyms and terminology, with notes like "WTF is this???!?!" and "what does that mean?!" It just made me laugh because all of this crap is now part of my daily vocabulary, and now I can't remember what it felt like to not know it. It's crazy how much can change in just a few months.

As usual I am pretty lame and boring, but here are a few suggestions of things that are not lame and boring!

Things I am loving currently:
Alt J's album An Awesome Wave
I am very picky about buying full albums. I usually buy just a couple of tracks that I know I'll like, read all the reviews, listen to it on Spotify over and over and weighing whether or not I just want to buy the damn thing. I finally bought An Awesome Wave on iTunes because...it is just that awesome. This is my favorite track:

Moleskine Notebooks
My work technically provides me with free notebooks, but they are the really cheap spiral-bound kind that take up too much room and the pages are always getting snagged on the damn spirals.

Enter molskine notebooks. They are slim, hold up well, and slip easily into my bag next to my computer. Plus, I'm the only one that has them so if I leave one lying around in a conference room somewhere (not that this ever happens, obviously...) it's easy to identify as mine. If it's a choice between free notebooks that suck, and spending $10 on notebooks every 9 months to a year, I'll take the latter.

Yes, that is Hagrid on my desk at work. Don't judge.

Things I am certain I will be loving shortly:
New Neil Gaiman book!!
If the early reviews are any indication, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is going to be fantastic. It comes out in mid-June, and if I can manage to hold off on devouring it immediately I'll probably read it on vacation in July. Cannot wait!

The Ocean at the End of the Lane - Hardcover

Star Trek: Into Darkness
If the fact that two of the things I am currently excited about include notebooks and a sci-fi novel didn't clue you in already, I am a big nerd. Like, not in that way that people are like "oh tee hee I'm a nerd because I maybe sometimes read a book" but a real, actual nerd. The kind that wore glasses the size of my face and was teased hardcore all through grade school and middle school. Trust me, I'm not trying to paint a sob story but it is kind of annoying when people are suddenly all "I'M A NERD" like now that it's cool to be a nerd everyone wants to be one....but they have never cried the nerd-tears of 6th grade mockery.

I digress. Anyways, I am pumped for this movie because 1) Star Trek and 2) Benedict Cumberbatch.

Yes, I know this is in spanish but I'm pretty sure you can figure out
that it's a Star Trek poster with Benedict Cumberbatch

New Dessa Album!!
Dessa is a super-talented local musician and writer, and her new album Parts of Speech drops June 25 aka not nearly soon enough. The first single, "Warsaw" is available on iTunes so hopefully that will tide me over until then.
