Randoms, and the joys of stress baking

Please observe the super healthy breakfast I made for myself and Ben on Saturday...and yes, we demolished half of the pan by ourselves in under an hour. It's cool, you don't have to tell me how awesome and impressive we are. We know.

APPLE CRISP! Favorite of fall baking
On Sunday, my mom came over after church/choir and helped us rake leaves in the backyard. There were a LOT of leaves...like, a whole lot. The maple tree on our neighbor's property (the same tree that is infested with carptenter ants that like to invade our attic) drops most of its leaves into our backyard every fall, and we rake and dispose of them. Delightful.

Ben and my mom, hard at work. Don't worry, I was helping too :)

The fruits of our labor

This has been a rough week at work. I don't really want to get into it (also, can't really get into it, nondisclosure and legality blah blah blah) but Monday and Tuesday were especially stressful. Luckily, Monday is was saved by some quiet reading time and an amazing yoga class. Most Mondays I head to my favorite coffee shop and relax with a book and a beverage (this time, mint tea) and then head to my favorite yoga class at 7. Currently I'm reading this book which is fascinating and also terrifying...I'm only about 1/4 of the way through but so far I highly recommend it.

Class was PERFECT and exactly what I needed. I do love to push and challenge myself in my yoga practice, "do the thing that scares you" and whatnot. But there is a time and a place for that, and there is a time and a place for...not that. There are poses that actually do make me feel fear, and I will pretty much only ever do them if forced (visvamitrasana, he full form of vasistasana with the leg up, and upavistha konasana), and also poses that are not scary but are definitely confrontational (urdhva dhanurasana, dhanurasana, pinca mayurasana...so basically backbends) and these are great and beneficial poses. But some days I'm like crap, this entire day has been confrontational; can I just do some hip openers and stretch my hammies and do my favorite arm balances? And on Monday the answer was YES. For the record, this is my favorite pose.
Tea + Book + Yoga = happy times

At some point during the day on Tuesday I consumed five mini Milky Ways in a fit of blind rage and sent Ben some very violent and probably concerning text messages about punching people in the throat. Luckily, I did not punch anyone and instead channelled all of my stress into a batch of ghost cookies which I then decorated with pink sparkles because why not. And I ate them while watching Sleepy Hollow and New Girl, so I immediately felt one billion times better about life.

The products of my rage

Today I worked from home (again! yay!) because I had a coffee meeting in the morning near my house. Since you've all now seen what I look like on a workday when I can't be bothered to put on real people clothes, I figure you're all dying to know what I look like on a normal day at the office. Ta da:

Blazer and Tshirt from H&M
Pants from J Crew
Shoes from Target
And no I'm not wearing socks, my ankles are actually that white
.....
If you're wondering what the heck is that thing in the bottom right hand corner of the above photo, the answer is obviously, a bust of William Shakespeare wearing my blue wig from Halloween. Duh.

Working from home is about 80% less stressful than being in the office sometimes. I get just as much done if not more, but it just feels easier to keep everything in perspective and remember what is really important in life. I think that right now, I need the occasional WFH day for my sanity, and because I have trouble keeping frustration and disbelief from showing in my facial expressions WFH days also keep my eyeballs from freezing permanently into this position:

This is the face I make after 1 hour calls with IT

Falling For....

Fall has hit the midwest and in a big way - we had frost the last two nights, but the days have been in the 60's and gorgeous. Personally, I love this weather and have been feeling ready for it for weeks! Here are some of my favorite things about fall:
- curling up on the couch with a blanket and a great book
- watching the leaves change color
- the feeling of a warm cup of tea my hands
- and of course... boots and sweaters

Nothing like curling up in a blanket with some tea, a good book, and a warm bowl of soup or curry - coincidentally if you're looking for a great curry recipe, please check out my guest post today over at Opera Girl Cooks, featuring a delicious Thai Massaman Curry that I learned to cook during our honeymoon! Our dinner guests and good friends Mark and Tessie gave four thumbs up.

Ben and Mark agree - clean plates and good conversation make for an excellent evening.

Please ignore the Twins losing in the background.

In other news, I decided last week (possibly against my better judgement) to do YogaJournal's 7-day Fall Detox. I've never done a detox or cleanse before, mostly because whenever I think detox, I think horrific lemon and cayanne pepper concoctions and days upon days of starvation. But lately, I've been feeling a lot more open to things I haven't tried before. This detox actually involves food, which I like, and a daily yoga practice. I have a wedding next Saturday, which means I have to finish on Friday...which means I have to start tomorrow.

I am really looking forward to discovering what the next seven days bring, but I'm also nervous. I'm normally a pretty small eater, so I'm not so scared of being hungry all the time due to the tiny portion sizes - I'm more nervous about eating the same thing for every meal for seven days straight. I love food, and I love cooking. Being creative and inventive in coming up with fun meal ideas and experimenting with different ingredient combinations is one of the things I look forward to most every day. I'm more worried about being tempted to quit out of boredom than I am about being tempted by hunger.

the "last" breakfast... homemade yogurt, figs, raspberries, chia seeds, peach butter and a sprinke of granola

It's times like this that I'm really, really glad I have a blog - if nothing else, putting my intention down in writing makes me feel like I've signed a contract with the universe. I'm committed. Keep me honest people.

P.S. If you want to join the insanity, Just go to the Yoga Journal Fall Detox to check out the recipes, take the dosha quiz, and sign up to receive e-mails.

Happy 4th

According to my friend who is a history teacher, July 2nd is the day the founders declared independence. The 4th of July was the day they voted on the wording of the declaration, and it wasn't until August 2nd that they actually signed the document. If the founding fathers were alive today, they might just be really confused rather than celebratory. It is also doubtful that they grilled hot dogs.

But that won't stop me from celebrating :)

A patriotically-striped sundress

Watermelon and blueberries...wouldn't be the 4th of July without 'em

...and the great American pastime

Right now, we're watching "How the States Got their Shape" on the History Channel (nerd alert) and soon we're heading downtown to meet all our friends and family at Target Field for the Twins game! Wedding celebration week kicks off in T minus 2 hours...get ready peeps!

Friday Five

Wow - it has been a while since I've done one of these! I think it was back before finals, and even before my computer crashed. I love "friday five" posts because they give me a chance to throw together a bunch of things I really like, without having to write an entire blog on any of them, and also without having to draw any coherent connections between them. Five things. There they are. Take it or leave it.

Fruit with rosewater

I came across this awesome but simple preparation in Deborah Madison's "Seasonal Fruit Desserts," and have been making/eating it almost constantly since then. Just throw some berries/fruit in a bowl, add some rosewater, sprinkle with brown/turbinado sugar, mix together, let them sit in the refrigerator for a while to allow the fruit to absorb the rosewater and sugar, and enjoy! Ms. Madison recommends using blackberries since they come from the same plant family as roses... but I've also enjoyed using a combination of berries/mangos and berries/peaches. The perfect summer dessert/snack/yogurt topping

Summer Wedges

This particular pair is from Banana Republic but I've seen a lot of great options around lately. Go snag some, wear them out, look fabulous.

Dessa's Spiral Bound collection

I have no idea how it took me until 2 weeks ago to realize that this existed. Dessa (if you aren't from MN you might not know her) is a local hip hop artist/musician/writer and member of Doomtree, and easily one of my top 3 favorite local artists. Spiral Bound contains poetry, autobiographical essays and fiction, all beautifully written and flavored with Dessa's penchant for somewhat dark themes and imagery. Her reflections on life are insightful and to the point, and, this might sound like a weird thing to say, but she has a talent for a final sentence. I've re-read all of the pieces probably 3 times now.

Homemade Yogurt

Ben's mom gave us a yogurt maker at the wedding shower and I couldn't have been more excited! I've been wanting one for a while, and we've made three batches from it already. Plus, this gives me an excuse to drink more milk, since we have to buy milk to make the yogurt and always have some left over.

My Thermos

My MPR Klean Kanteen thermos might be the best thing ever. I haul it around with me constantly - it carries tea/coffee in the morning, more tea throughout the day, cold water during my yoga classes, etc. I would probably die without it.

Today I have a bunch of wedding-related tasks to finish: picking up my veil from the bridal shop, hair trial, and I will probably bring my wedding bands to the bridal shop when I pick up the veil - I'm keeping all my wedding day accessories at the shop so I don't misplace them. Knowing me, that is something that could easily happen and I can't take any chances! Have a great weekend - I'll be around sporadically but mostly I'll be at the Desiree Rumbaugh Anusara workshop all day tomorrow, and my makeup trial is on Sunday. Crazyness. Have a great Friday, everyone!

SINKing feelings...

On the plus side, my landlady is showing my apartment to someone tomorrow! Hopefully they'll think it is so awesome they want to move in May 1 and I'll be off the hook for May... side note, if you know of anyone in the twin cities area who is looking for a 1BR in Minneapolis starting May 1 have them call me! It's a beautiful apartment, I am really sad to leave it... right on the bus line, 3 blocks from Calhoun Square, a few minutes walk from the lake etc.

Anywho... on the minus side, my right-hand sink drain somehow managed to clog itself. I am really not sure how this happened, since I only use that side of the sink to drain dishes and never even run water down it! I tried Draino, which at first didn't work at all and then my sink was full of water AND Draino, neither of which was going anywhere (gross), and then finally kind of worked and yesterday afternoon it was draining but this morning it's clogged again. Any ideas? Anyone??? Is gunk from the other side of the sink getting pushed over in the pipe? Why isn't Draino working??? I'm stumped. And I really don't want to have to call the "plumber" (aka my landlady's son who tends to fix things with muscle and/or duct tape rather than actual skill)... so any advice on plumbing is greatly appreciated :) Moving on... yesterday I tried Brittany's idea for a brown rice breakfast bowl! I have tons of leftover brown rice from the weekend and am trying to figure out how to use it all up... I froze half of it and have been using the other half to make lunches and dinners, and now breakfast! The mix: 1/2 cup cooked brown rice; 1 T Bob's Red Mill 5 grain cereal; a little less than 1/4 cup plain soy milk; the same ammt of water; 1/2 T vanilla ;1/4 T Cinnamon; 3 cardamom pods (totally optional). Cook everything together in a pot for 7-8 minutes, or until the liquid is pretty much absorbed. Pour into a bowl and remove cardamom pods (you do not want to chomp on these, trust me!). I topped mine with 1/2 a diced apple, honey and some almonds but any toppings would be delicious :) I also broke into the sea-salt chocolate bar from Foodzie last night! YUM! The finish is shiny, the chocolate is rich and creamy and the salty balance is perfect. My only criticism is that I wish there were more goji berries... they are few and far between and really if they're going to be in the name of the bar they should at least have a solid presence! Wedding updates: All of our travel arrangements for Thailand are completely booked (except for the hostel in Bangkok, which won't let us book until closer to when we'll be there), and the invitations are FINALLY ordered... probably a few weeks later than I would have liked, but for some reason I kept procrastinating it. They are supposed to send us a .pdf of the finished product to approve but I haven't gotten it yet...hopefully soon... I really want to be able to send the invites in May! Also, I've decided to ignore the fact that it's 44 degrees and break out the spring jackets and scarves. Hopefully if I'm dressed for the occasion, the weather will take the hint :)
